  • Earle in his note on this word, p. 300, suggests a translation other than that given by previous editors. By them it has been translated 'coal,' he suggests 'gravel.' The word may be of Celtic origin, and so may be compared with Old French grave, of which gravel is a diminutive. Celtic forms are Bret. grouan gravel: Corn. grow gravel, sand: W. gro pebbles.
